Florya by season
When to Visit Florya: A Season-by-Season Guide, Bakirkoy
The most comfortable seasons for a Florya visit are usually spring and autumn, when the air is mild for a walk on the beach and the crowds are lighter than in summer. Istanbul Aquarium is indoors and can be visited in any season, so on a winter or rainy day you can build your Florya plan around the aquarium.
Below we take the seasons one by one. Whatever the season, checking the current forecast before you set out is the best first step.
The seasons at a glance
| Season | Beach | Aquarium | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Good for walking | Good | Weather can change through the day |
| Summer | Lively, hot at midday | An indoor break | Weekend and holiday crowds |
| Autumn | Good for walking | Good | Evenings cool down early |
| Winter | Short, windy walks | The centre of the plan | Wind, rain, short days |
Spring
It is a lovely time for walking on the beach. The weather can change through the day, so dress in layers: cool in the morning, mild by the afternoon. Expect the aquarium to get busier on public holidays and during school breaks; if you can, choose an ordinary weekday.
Spring has another advantage: the days are longer, so after the aquarium you have more time to walk the beach and get back to Bakırköy before dark.
Summer
Florya beach comes alive in summer and can be crowded, especially at weekends and in the late afternoon. Put the beach walk early in the morning or after the sun drops, and go into the aquarium, an indoor space, during the midday heat. Keep a hat, water and a change of clothes in the bag. If you are thinking of swimming, look at the official notices about swimming conditions for that year.
School holidays can make the aquarium busier too. Check tickets and times on the official site in advance and pick a weekday if you can.
Autumn
In the first weeks of autumn the weather is usually good for a beach walk and the crowds thin out compared with summer. Evenings cool down early, so take a light jacket. It is a good season for seeing the Florya Atatürk Sea Mansion and the beach in the same afternoon; check the mansion's opening days and hours from official sources beforehand.
Towards the end of autumn, rainy days become more likely. If that happens, start with the aquarium and leave the beach for an hour when the sky clears.
Winter
In winter the beach can be windy and chilly, though a short walk on a bright day is still a pleasure. Build the day around the aquarium in this season and treat the beach as a small extra. Days are short, so planning the return before dark is easier with children. Remember that the aquarium can be busy during the winter school holiday.
Whatever the season
- Check the forecast: shorten or stretch the beach part accordingly.
- Take the Marmaray: road traffic varies with the season and the day; the rail line makes the timing predictable.
- Check official information: aquarium and mansion hours can change by period.
- Stay flexible: if the weather turns, move the plan to Bakırköy; the shopping streets are 6 minutes on foot and Capacity shopping mall 9.
What to pack by season
| Season | Add to the bag |
|---|---|
| Spring | A light jacket, layers, a small umbrella |
| Summer | A hat, plenty of water, a change of clothes, wet wipes |
| Autumn | A cardigan or light jacket, an extra layer for the evening |
| Winter | A warm coat, a hat, gloves, a rain jacket |
Whatever season you come in, do not forget your Istanbulkart; getting to Florya by Marmaray is the most predictable way to travel, whatever the weather.
Holiday periods
At certain times of year both the beach and the aquarium get noticeably busier: the summer holidays, the winter school holiday, school breaks and public holidays are the main ones. If you are coming in one of those periods, start the day early, check the aquarium's current ticket and entry information beforehand and leave the beach walk for the quieter hours. Demand for accommodation also rises at holiday times and in summer, so we would suggest asking about your dates early; it makes finding the apartment type you want easier.
Where to stay, by season
All our apartments have air conditioning and hot water 24/7; for children coming back cold and tired from the beach, that is a small but welcome comfort. For longer stays, the One-bedroom apartment (1+1) and the Two-bedroom apartment (2+1) with their own kitchens are practical. The building has a lift and security cameras, so climbing to the flat with wet coats in winter or beach bags in summer is easy.
